Thanks! I think about colleagues who have deep expertise in a hundred things I don't--and will never even have basic literacy in! It's unrealistic to ask everyone to be proficient in AI in order to teach college courses, and unnecessary as well.
Really great article, and very timely--there is a real opportunity here for faculty to leverage the current GenAI "disruption" of writing courses to renew our focus on writing as a human-centered process in parallel with our efforts to engage the tools in our classrooms.
Great article! I find AI to be a useful partner in the co-creation of my own work, but it's important to avoid using AI as a crutch, especially for students.
It's essential to let students know that the founders and CEOs are standing with authoritarians. Anything regurgitated from AI is based on writing and art stolen from others. They are standing by as women and LGBTQ people are disenfranchised, and scientific research is gutted. After standing with Trump at his inauguration have you heard any objections to his actions or DOGE's access to your data? Crickets.
Celebrate originality and meaningful deep reading. Invite students to develop their own voice as writers.
Let me know if you ever want me to republish one of your posts. I have 5000 subs right now, and 10000 followers. I try to help out newcomers to the AI x Education space. I love the clarity of your approach. Do you know the work of Jeanne Beatrix Law? I really like the frame of awareness over literacy.

Completely agreed! I think about awareness vs literacy as the difference between understanding and using like drug awareness vs media literacy.

thanks, Alan! And yes, I think what matters is to be intentional about the human and AI use.

Loved the three approaches to dealing with AI as we teach. Very useful and generative post!
So glad you found it helpful!

Yes--I think a multitiered approach is likely to be the most effective, as you also note in that post.
